Hormone Therapy
Since Hormone Therapy comes with a variety of opinions and reams of ever-emerging research, The Hubbard Clinic wants to share the latest studies and advancements made in this fascinating field. Providing a safe haven for your thoughts and concerns is important to us. Medical advances continue to evolve and improve. You’re now in a fortunate position to take advantage of the advances made over the last twenty years.
We’ll go over the many options available and assist you in finding the treatment method that best fits your medical history...and assist you in making sound decisions as you enter into this special time of life.
Bioidentical hormone therapy
Bioidentical hormone therapies are plant-derived hormones that are similar to the ones produced by your body. Bioidenticals are finding increasing acceptance with many physicians and holistic practitioners. For seniors, many find bioidentical hormones easier to handle than the traditional treatments. (see Bioidentical Hormones - North American Menopausal Sociey Clarification Statement)
Bioidentical Hormones can be prepared and assembled by a pharmacist according to the wishes of the physician and patient. Many nutritionists swear by their effectiveness; however it is important to remember that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have not approved many bioidentical hormones.
With research and debate ongoing, the experts at the Hubbard Clinic will be happy to discuss the latest news and research about bioidenticals…and how it may affect you.
Nutritional counseling
In our senior years, our bodies’ needs and requirements may change drastically depending on one’s health. Continued nutritional counseling can provide valuable, helpful dietary information that allows us to continue to enjoy the activities to which we’ve grown accustomed.
Weight control counseling
Our bodies continue to change, right on through our senior years.
Slowing metabolism, activity changes brought on by either lifestyle, environmental, or health changes means we need to keep track of our weight and make the necessary adjustments to maintain good health.
The Hubbard Clinic can offer informed weight control counseling to meet these later life changes. Good nutrition choices can affect one’s well-being and quality of life, so it’s important that proper consideration be given this important subject. We refer patients with more comprehensive dietary and weight concerns to a nutritionist.
Additionally, we offer total body composition indexing which measures one's percentage of body fat (click the thumbnail). Body composition indexing can be a very effective tool in evaluating weight control and weight managament goals.
Grief counseling
There are many transitions during our senior years, some of them revelatory and joyful, some of them bittersweet. The loss of friends, family…. Sometimes even the loss of our own sense of whom we are and what we used to do…all these life changes need attention and understanding.
Knowing that you are not alone is an important part of counseling. The feelings you are experiencing, from loss, to loneliness, to regret…all are a normal part of the grieving process.
The experts at the Hubbard Clinic recognize that not everyone grieves the same way. Regardless of how your losses affect you, we can provide supportive companionship, and be an informative presence during this difficult and challenging time.
Periodic screening of cholesterol levels and thyroid
At this stage of life, keeping track of cholesterol and thyroid conditions through blood testing and lipid profiles continues to be as important as even in monitoring health and well being.
If cholesterol levels are elevated, modifications of diet and exercise, as well as medication, may be advised. Additionally screening for C-Reactive Protein may be done. CRP is a general marker for inflammation and is used as a very rough gauge for heart disease risk.
Pelvic Ultrasound
If you are experiencing any difficulties, your doctor may order a pelvic ultrasound. Pelvic ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of the bladder, ovaries, uterus, cervix and fallopian tubes. This useful tool helps your physician evaluate several common gynecological problems including endometriosis, abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain and fibroids.
We use two types of ultrasound:
Transadominal ultrasound, which uses a small handheld transducer passed over the lower abdominal region. This is helpful in finding large fibroids.
Transvaginal ultrasound makes use of a small transducer which is inserted into a women’s vagina. This is useful in examining the endometrium or lining of the uterus, the ovaries, and bladder.
Sometimes both types of ultrasound may be used by your physician to gain a more complete understanding of the pelvic area.
In conjunction with pelvic ultrasound, an elective blood test, CA 125, can be done to aid in the detection of early ovarian cancer. Though no blood test can tell if one has cancer, a high CA 125 value may be an indication that a woman should receive further diagnostic screening.
Osteoporosis screening
By now, there’s a good chance you have either avoided or are in the differing stages osteoporosis. It often means changes in our lives. Certain activities, even routine ones, can become perilous since bone density has been compromised. But treating Osteoporosis and living with it, is a lifestyle choice that can be satisfactorily accomplished. First, however, an Osteoporosis diagnosis needs to be made.
Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry or DXA scan is a painless procedure used to measure bone density. There are usually no complications from the procedure and no aesthesia is required. X-rays are involved, but the risk from radiation is extremely low. When indicated, Vertebral Fracture Assessment or VFA may also be used in conjunction with DXA to see existing vertebral (spinal) fractures.
Testing for bone density is the most accurate way to diagnose osteoporosis and to estimate the patient’s chances for bone fractures.
